  5.     Move over, Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. The race is
  6. on to produce a stamp that will alert consumers to products
  7. that meet the highest standards of environmental safety. The
  8. Green Seal, introduced last week, should start appearing early
  9. next year on such products as toilet paper, light bulbs,
  10. laundry cleaners and facial tissues that meet the criteria
  11. established by a panel of scientists. "Our objective is to help
  12. American consumers vote with their pocketbooks on environmental
  13. issues," says former Earth Day chairman Denis Hayes, who is
  14. chief executive of the nonprofit, Washington-based Green Seal
  15. project.

  17.     Meanwhile, Green Cross, a nonprofit subsidiary of Scientific
  18. Certification Systems of Oakland is working with four national
  19. supermarket chains and manufacturers to certify products that
  20. meet high standards for recyclability. The cross will appear
  21. for the first time in July. Manufacturers seeking the Green
  22. Seal or the Green Cross will have to pay fees to cover the cost
  23. of analyzing their products, and Green Seal will levy an annual
  24. licensing fee. Can the two ecologos happily coexist in a green
  25. world? There may not be room for both, say experts. Ultimately
  26. the fittest will survive.
